Home invasions are on the rise across the country.
The best defense is to safeguard your home against break-ins for the protection of your family and valuables.
The best defense is to safeguard your home against break-ins for the protection of your family and valuables.
Doors:
- Front door must be solid (sometimes the most expensive is not the safest)
- The lock must be a deadbolt and the screws to the latch must go past the jam and into solid wood. ( Many doors have been easily pushed or kicked in)
- Sliding glass doors- Do Not depend on the lock on the door. The majority of break-ins are from sliding glass doors because they are in the back of the house and easily pried open UNLESS you place a piece of wood in the slide so the door cannot be pried open.
- French Doors – Not recommended (too easy to push in)
- If your screen door locks, lock it.
Windows:
- Ground floor and basement windows – opened or unsecured windows when not at home or evening time are a red carpet invitation for any intruder.
- Air conditioning – Secure top and bottom of window. Anybody can push it in.
Exterior lighting:
- Have spotlights around your house, some lights on a timer and some lights on motion detectors.
- All lights should be at least 12 feet off the ground (in some cases burglars stood on lawn chairs and unscrewed the bulbs).
- Use street lights to your advantage. Keep the trees on the street trimmed so they are not blocking the lights.
Shrubs:
- Your shrubs in front of your house should not grow past your windows (so you can’t see out).
- A burglar can work on your window for a long period of time without being seen.
